When #18 was a young fish, pirates captured her on the high seas as she and her family fled the war of the great reef on a ship bound for the Mediterranean Sea. As the captain came among them looking for slaves to sell, #18 could see the other fish shivering in fear. She stepped forward, her colors shining and sparkling in the sun. “I’ll join your crew,” she said, “but only if you let the others go.” The captain looked at her, considering. “And if I don’t?” he said. “Then I swear I’ll kill you where you stand.” The pirate captain drew in close until he was mere inches from her face. She could smell the Sake on his breath. He looked at her unblinking for what seemed like minutes, his expression unreadable. And then he began to laugh. “I accept,” he said. #18 has been a pirate ever since.
